Children who spend more than three hours each school day on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are more than twice
as likely to suffer poor mental health, official figures have shown.
While 12 percent of children who spend no time on social networking websites have signs of mental ill-health, the figure
rises to 27 percent for those who spend three hours or more a day on the sites, a report from
the Office for National Statistics showed.
Experts say such children may have delays in their emotional and social development because they spend so much time online.
Dr Hayley Van Zwanberg, who treats children with mental illness, said: "Children are totally addicted to online worlds which
are damaging both to the way they see themselves and the way they get to know the real world;
some young children are finding it hard to tell what is real from what is not real."
